wsop2010_thn.jpgThe ruckus rose up from the padded seats of the Penn and Teller Theater. At first it could be mistaken for a chant of “U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A!”, but the French-Canadian accent gave it away.

“Duh-ha-mel! Du-ha-mel! Du-hamel!”

It was chip-leader Jonathan Duhamel’s rail singing the call of a crowd that’s coming awake. It came earlier in the day when their man was still chip leader. It was a sweet sound, one that must now be a bittersweet echo in the Canadian’s ear.

Oh, it’s probably not so much that Duhamel expected to be the wire-to-wire chip leader. No one could reasonably expect something so grand. But after that ace-king versus Fillipo Candio’s aces, Duhamel ran into a game-changing pot with Joseph Cheong.

Duhamel had three-bet an open-raise from Cheong and they saw a flop of [4c][ad][ts]. Cheong check-called a bet worth more than 3 million from Duhamel. On the [6c] turn, both players checked. Then came the [jd] river. Now Cheong led out for more than 8 million. Duhamel made the call to see Cheong’s [4d][6d].

It was a hard blow to take. Suddenly, Duhamel, who had been chip leader for four months, was in third place out of the seven remaining.

Jonathan Duhamel looks like a a meerkat peering out from his den. His face is thin, angular, and covered in stubble. It’s mostly hidden by his black, Grim Reaper-esque PokerStars hoodie. My co-writer Howard Swains described Duhamel as looking like a Star Wars-esque emperor. From my angle, he’s less imposing, but just as dangerous. Meerkats may be small, but they will mess you up fast if you aren’t paying close attention.

jonathan_duhamel_nov_nine.jpg

To start the day, Duhamel stacked on chair on top another to put him on level with the rest of the players. There was no way to stack a chair under his chips when he was running into aces or an oddly-turned two pair.

Within a few minutes, Duhamel was again peering out from the darkness of his hoodie, his eyes set on Cheong, the man who had taken his chip lead, the man on whom he wanted to unleash some meerkat justice.

When Cheong came in for a standard raise, Duhamel three-bet him to more than 4 million. Cheong wasn’t going away and made the call. On a [as][js][jd] flop, both Cheong and Duhamel checked. The turned [ks] drew a bet worth seven million from Duhamel. This time, Cheong could not keep up. Score one for the meertkats and the crowd of fans with their “Duh-ha-mel! Du-ha-mel! Du-hamel!” cheer.

Here’s a bit of our pre-play interview with Duhamel.

The WSOP Main Event final table, also known as the November Nine, will kick off in just a couple of day at the Rio in Las Vegas. This year’s final table is probably the strongest that it may have ever been since the poker boom started in 2003. There is only one true amateur at the table and we have one player who has a chance to tie for the WSOP Player of the Year. Here is how I think the final nine will do at the final table.

Your 2010 WSOP November Nine

Jason Senti is heading into the final table as the short stack. Historically, the short stack has not done very well at this final table, and there really isn’t anything about Senti’s game that hints that he will fare any better. Best finish for Senti will be 8th.

Soi Nguyen is the lone amateur at this final table. He also has the least experience over the rest of the table as he plays very infrequently. He does have some strong tutors in Nam Le and Chino Rheem, but I think his lack of experience will show at the final table. Best finish for Nguyen will be 7th.

Michael Mizrachi is always dangerous in any final table that he plays at. If this was 2006 and not 2010, I would make him the instant favorite. If Mizrachi can build himself up to 25 Million or more early, he will be a threat. I still feel that he has too big of a road to hoe to win this thing. Best finish for Mizrachi will be 4th place.

Filippo Candio is the “nice guy” of the final table. He has a solid resume, but he has not shown me enough to really consider him a threat. If he builds a stack, he has a shot to go deep, but I feel this is going to be a case of the nice guy finishing short of winning. He might finish in fifth, but I see Candio finishing in the same position he started the final table, 6th place.

Matt Jarvis is going to be the most dangerous type of player heading into the final table. He has two decent wins recently and in addition he is playing for his father who is battling cancer. This type of motivation makes any player dangerous. If he can go on a hot streak, he can win this thing, but I really see him finishing in 3rd place.

John Racener is fourth in chips heading into the final table, but outside of Mizrachi, he also has the most experience at this final. I think that Racener’s experience and recent play is strong enough to help him overcome the difference in chip should he not run into a cooler. I look for Racener to make heads-up for this event.

Joseph Cheong is 3rd in chips going into the final table and playing for his first significant score of his poker life. I think a combination of the pressure and the fact that he did not focus on the game as much as other players in the past will cost him the bracelet. I do think that he is solid enough to finish the event in 3rd place, and securing the biggest payday of his career.

Out of all the players at the final table, I see John Dolan as having the biggest chance of flaming out at the final table. His style has been pegged as relentlessly aggressive and I foresee players taking advantage of this. My gut tells me he is going to suffer some beats and probably finish in around 5th place.
Jonathan Duhamel enters the WSOP November Nine final table as the chip leader and I look for him to do much of the same that he did to get his spot at the table. While he was very aggressive at the final table bubble, he has shown a strong ability to switch gears at the right time. His massive chip lead is going to be hard to overcome short of him suffering some bad beats. I expect Duhamel to make it to heads-up in this event.

Heads-up play I predict to be between John Racener and Jonathan Duhamel. Unless heads-up play becomes to grossly lopsided affair, I expect Racener to chip away at Duhamel and eventually overtake him. In the end, I see Racener’s experience allowing him to run away with the WSOP bracelet and the nearly Million in prize money.

So there you have it. I am predicting John Racener to win the WSOP Main Event. Play kicks off on Saturday and we will know by the end of the day whether my predictions will hold any weight. You can follow coverage on ESPN3.com is you have a participating internet provider. Otherwise, stay tuned here as we will bring you a recap following Saturday’s action.

wsop2010_thn.jpgTwenty-four hours from now, we’ll be in the air and traveling west at several hundred miles per hour. Upon landing, we’ll leave our planes with the throngs of Las Vegas hopefuls, make our way to the taxi line, and order our drivers toward the Rio. Inside the giant purple towers, all will be familiar. The All American Bar and Grill will be dishing out the red meat. The faux-drum beat that precedes the dancing waitresses will bang out every 15 minutes. Someone will walk by with a two-foot high souvenir mug full of liquid hope. Someone might even scream “Pai gow!” But in the air, there will be a different energy, because just hours later we will again see the third generation of the November Nine.

If you are planning to watch, or just want a general feel of what is supposed to happen, here’s a little preview:

At 9am, the hundreds of people who want to see the players will line up for their first-come, first-served seats. They will laugh, take photos, and wait. It’s the wait that will seem interminable. The line will sit immobile for two and half hours before the doors open. With each minute, the queue will snake farther out of the theater, around the corner at Starbucks, and down the convention center hallway toward the casino. Beginning at 11:30, the fans will push through the doors and on their way to watch 2010 poker history.

At high noon, the music will begin, and each of the November Nine will walk in the door one by one. If the schedule holds (which it never, ever does), at 12:10pm, someone will call out “Shuffle up and deal!” and the players will begin play on Level 36. That’s 250,000-500,000/50,000 for one hour, 15 minutes, and 30 seconds remaining, in case you didn’t take a look at the tournament clock at the end of summertime play.

Here’s how they will look, in order of their seats.

1. Jason Senti (PokerStars Sponsored Player) 7,625,000
2. Joseph Cheong 23,525,000
3. John Dolan 46,250,000
4. Jonathan Duhamel (PokerStars Sponsored Player) 65,975,000
5. Michael Mizrachi 14,450,000
6. Matthew Jarvis 16,700,000
7. John Racener 19,050,000
8. Filippo Candio 16,400,000
9. Cuong “Soi” Nguyen 9,650,000

Jonathan Duhamel, November Nine chip leader

They are not all guaranteed millionaires. The first man to bust out will get a piddly 1,823. After that, they’re all millionaires, and all fighting for a first prize that is near million.

Here are the payouts:

2010 November Nine prizes
1. ,944,310
2. ,545,955
3. ,130,049
4. ,092,545
5. ,332,992
6. ,772,959
7. ,356,720
8. ,045,743
9. 1,823

Well, that’s how it will look officially, anyway. In actual fact, the person who busts in ninth place will get nothing.

Why?

Well, as it turns out, everybody has already been given the equivalent of ninth place money. The rest of the prize pool has been invested and earned a whopping 9 in interest. So, everyone will be be splitting up that money, too. First place will be getting 2 of that investment return, which we would expect to be used to buy the first round for the media afterward. Right?

It’s a young table, to be sure. The average age of the remaining players is just a little older than 26 years old. Chip leader Duhamel is the youngest at 23. Soi Nguyen is the only player older than 30. He’s the old man at 37.
